**Process and Delivery of the Low Volatility Hedged Process**

History of the Low Volatility Process:

The concept behind the low volatility process was developed in response to retirement clientele who faced the risk of losing their savings due to unexpected events, economic downturns, and other issues.

This process sources low-cost exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and index funds that meet specific criteria based on various technical and fundamental measurements that meet our investment committee's risk metrics. The following bullet points contain the guidelines for Investments considered for the low volatility process:

  • Non-leveraged

  • Parent companies with at least $100 million in assets under management

  • Clear investment index strategies

  • No speculative investments

  • Proven track records

  • Daily liquidity

**How the Low Volatility Hedged Process is calculated**

The process really begins with risk and income. Income is calculated around a client's Financial Plan using Money Guide Pro. Click here for more information. To evaluate risk, We turn to the difference between the risk-free rate (a rolling benchmark set by the Federal Reserve policy) and the required investment return clients must maintain in there own financial planning results.

To maximize risk and efficiency needed to maintain the integrity of the process, the Magnetic North Investment Committee references the research done by investment legend Tom McLellan, who applied portfolio optimization techniques originally developed by Harry Markowitz. Harry Markowitz, a Nobel Prize winner, introduced the Efficient Frontier Analysis in 1953, which theorizes that there is a trade-off between portfolio risk and return. Generally, the more risk an investor is willing to accept, the higher the expected return.

The Magnetic North Investment Committee has carried this principle to create a liquid, risk- adjusted fund that works with Envestnet's Money Guide Pro. Click here to see current market statistics about the process.

Beta: the volatility of the investment compared to the volatility of the benchmark. A value lower than 1 indicates that the investment is less volatile than the benchmark.
