Elections again

Dear all,

 

Inevitably, it is that time again. November 5th looms over us.

 

We endure division and heated debate over the Presidential elections every four years, and every four years, I remind people that the outcome will not change our investing philosophy.

 

I remember back 2000, the dreaded hanging chads drove people up the wall. I was at Villanova, trading stocks on my Scott trade and reading the WSJ in black and white print. Markets fascinated me then, and they do now.

 

But people put too much emphasis on who the President is.

Certainly, the media won't let us escape it.

 

I have a challenge: name two local politicians running in your town for a county seat [not state or federal], local only.

 

Few of us can name more than one offhand. Which is unfortunate as local politics affects more of your daily life than the President.

 

Fortunately, locally elected officials are responsible for synchronized streetlights, garbage pickup, responsive police and fire departments, clean parks, and all the rest of what we live with daily.

 

We need to remember this as we watch the over-heated, often one-sided, discussions on channels like CNN, FOX and more.

 

As a student of history, I can promise you regardless of who wins on November 5th, life will continue on, and this will pass as it does every four years. We will all survive it.

 

If you interact with someone enraged at the results of the election, I suggest you politely thank them for their opinion and walk away. People will be upset; it's understandable and best not to antagonize.
